Alterna Straightening Balm Review: Is It Worth the Money?

So far, I’ve tried several different Alterna products, and none of them have failed me. The caviar shampoo and conditioners and the styling mud in particular have been very impressive, and I’ve even worked them into my everyday hair care routine. And since I started using them, I’ve gotten so many compliments on my hair that I’ve lost count. Sometimes I get several compliments over the course of a single day. It’s really overwhelming how great these products work.

That’s why I was so excited to try the Alterna Straightening Balm. I’ve always had very curly hair that is almost impossible to manage even on a good day. I’ve resisted using straighteners to fix it, as I’m a big believer in going with what’s natural for your look, but every once in a while I get so fed up with trying to control that mop on my head that I take more extreme measures.

Recently, I was going through one of those frustrating moments, so I decided to try this Alterna Straightening Balm. It’s unique in that it uses hemp seeds as its main straightening mechanism. This may seem weird at first, but it’s actually makes sense from a scientific and a practical standpoint. After all, hemp is used to make some of the strongest ropes and fabrics in the world. If you can transfer even a little bit of that power into a hair product, you’ll really be onto something. And it appears Alterna has succeeded in doing that.

Of course, as with many straighteners, I had my doubts. I’ve never found one that is totally effective in taming my wild hair. And when I’ve found products that work pretty well, the effect tends to wear off very quickly, sometimes even within hours of application. So, when I used this Alterna Straightening Balm, I was prepared for disappointment.

And here’s the good news. While the product wasn’t perfect, I did find that it straightened my hair and kept it neat and orderly for longer than other straightening balms have done. I applied it first thing in the morning, and I half expected its effects to be worn away by noon, but when I checked by reflection at lunch time, I was delighted to find that everything was still in place. Had I finally found the perfect hair straightener?

Unfortunately, the later results were mixed. My hair was still straight by 2 PM, and it was still in pretty good shape at 3, but by the time I got home that evening, my hair was back to normal. So, in other words, Alterna Straightening Balm did work better than other products, but it still wasn’t perfect.

That’s why, considering the price of this product, I can only half recommend it. If the 8.3-ounce bottle were, say, four or five dollars cheaper, I think I could go along with it. As it is, I can recommend this product if you have a few extra dollars to spend, but if you’re strapped for cash, you might as well go with one of the cheaper options.
